06 / Telco · Hack #40
Check whether your telco has a cheaper sub-brand on the same network.
Several Malaysian networks are also sold under budget sub-brands or digital-only brands that use the same infrastructure with fewer frills.
“eh, same tower?”THE PROBLEM
People pay a premium for the main brand assuming the coverage is different. Often it isn’t.
WHAT MOST PEOPLE DO
Stay on the flagship postpaid plan for years.
(no judgement. we did too.)THE CHEAPHACK
Look up which network your telco’s budget or digital sub-brand runs on. If it’s the same network, compare the plan for your actual data usage, then port your number.
HOW TO DO IT
- STEP 1Check your usage (see the data-you-don’t-use hack).
- STEP 2Look up sub-brands and MVNOs, and which network each uses.
- STEP 3Compare plans at your data level, including any roaming or family features you use.
- STEP 4Port your number via the official process. Your number stays the same.
You’ll need: An unlocked phone · No active device contract
THE MATH
WHEN THIS MAKES SENSE
- You mostly need data and calls, not premium bundles.
WHEN IT DOESN’T
- You rely on flagship-only perks (priority support, specific bundles).
- You’re mid-contract.
THINGS TO WATCH OUT FOR
- Network sharing and prioritisation policies differ. Coverage is the same; peak-time speed can differ. Check current terms.
- Keep your old SIM active until the port completes so banking OTPs still arrive.
DO THE MATH WITH YOUR NUMBERS
RM300 for 45 min ≈ RM400 per hour of effort.
