06 / Telco · Hack #02
Stop paying for data you don't use.
Most people are on a plan sized for a version of themselves that streams 4K on the bus.
“check your last 3 bills first!”THE PROBLEM
Telco plans are sold on headline data amounts. Your actual usage is probably far lower because you're on Wi-Fi most of the day.
WHAT MOST PEOPLE DO
Keep the plan they signed up for years ago because switching feels like admin.
(no judgement. we did too.)THE CHEAPHACK
Check your last three bills for actual data used, then move to the smallest plan that comfortably covers it. Many telcos let you downgrade in-app without a call.
HOW TO DO IT
- STEP 1Open your telco app and find usage history for the last 3 months.
- STEP 2Note the highest month, then add a 20% buffer.
- STEP 3Compare plans from your own telco and at least one competitor at that data level.
- STEP 4Downgrade in-app, or port your number if the competitor is clearly cheaper.
You’ll need: Access to your telco app or bills
THE MATH
WHEN THIS MAKES SENSE
- You use less than half of your plan's data most months.
- You're not locked into a device contract.
WHEN IT DOESN’T
- You're mid-contract with a penalty for changing.
- You genuinely use the data (tethering, no home Wi-Fi).
THINGS TO WATCH OUT FOR
- Plan prices and availability change often. Check current pricing before switching.
- Check whether downgrading removes a bundled benefit you actually use (roaming, family lines).
DO THE MATH WITH YOUR NUMBERS
RM276 for 5 min ≈ RM3,312 per hour of effort.
